The Evolutionist View
Evolutionists argue that entropy only takes place when a system is said to be "closed", or lacks an external energy source. Evolutionists say that a more accurate way of defining entropy is that it "is a measurement of the amount of energy in a system that is unusable." It is also said that energy is just a measurement of the dispersal of energy due to different temperatures. If these are more accurate definitions of entropy, then many of the arguments for Creationists can be thrown out.
For instance, the argument that Earth cannot allow for evolution because it is a system and therefore applies to the law of entropy is completely disproven. Entropy only applies to systems that are closed. If a room is left untouched for weeks, and the room is messy, it surely will not clean itself up. It cannot go from disorder to order. A log cabin cannot be built in the woods without the interference of a contracter, builders, tools, and material. But luckily for Earth, the evolutionists argue, we have an energy source (the Sun) which allows for processes like evolution.
Evolutionists also tend to argue that Creationists are just simply foolish for believing what they do about the second law of thermodynamics, and the implications it has for our world. A misunderstanding of a certain subject can lead to false understanding by many. For example, our class textbook uses a picture of a messy room to illustrate entropy. Evolutionists say this is an innacurate representation of entropy, because entropy is not a measurement of disorder. And the fact that this example is used quite popularly to illustrate the subject seems to be a source of frustration for scientists that subscribe to this side of the argument. The more people are misled, the less educated they are. The purpose of science is to understand our world more, and as long as other scientists are misleading people, science cannot do it's job.
